Bromley Schools’ Collegiate is an Employment Based Initial Teacher Training provider (EBITT) for approximately 30 trainees under the GTP scheme.
We offer the GTP to graduates employed in partnership schools.
The school may appoint a GTP trainee to fill a vacancy or as a supernumerary, depending upon the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Bromley Schools' Collegiate will arrange for the trainee to follow an individual training programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The trainee is employed by the school as an unqualified teacher and receives a training salary (taxable).
To be eligible for the programme you must be:
- Employed as an unqualified teacher
- A graduate with a good degree
- Hold GCSE English and Maths grades A-C
This programme suits career changers who need to earn a living while they train. Places are highly competitive and you may wish to consider other routes into teaching, such as the School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) as an alternative.
Schools will look favourably upon graduates who have had some experience of working with young people.

How long is the programme?
Normally, the programme is for one year. If you already have considerable teaching experience, it may be possible to gain Qualified Teacher Status in less time. Programmes are typically three terms, but you may be eligible for training on a two-term programme.
What goes into the training plan?
The EBITT will undertake assessment of your training needs and build a training programme tailored to those needs. Some training sessions are run centrally covering issues such as:
- Lesson Planning
- Behaviour management
- Assessment for Learning
- Personalisation
Most training takes place in the employing school. There is a requirement for all graduates on the programme to undertake a second school placement midway through the training programme. This is usually 15 days and graduates are given a specific focus, depending on their individual needs, for the placement.
How do I apply for the GTP?
We are a partnership of 9 Bromley secondaryschools. We only provide training for GTs employed within this partnership. Registration forms for GTP are available from our website and should be emailed directly to us with a recent CV.
The TDA webpage also has information on the GTP: www.teach-tda.gov.uk or contact the Advice Line: 0845 6000 991
Can Bromley Schools’ Collegiate help me to find a GTP vacancy?
We act as a clearing house for GTP places available in partnership schools. Our main recruitment period for GTP is March/April for a September start. Places for the Graduate Teacher Programme are limited and you may wish to consider School Centred Initial Techer Training if places for GTP have been filled. (See below)
What happens at the end of my training?
If the external assessor is satisfied that the required standards have been met, you will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status.

There is no final examination and assessment is continuous throughout the course. Trainees are required to submit a portfolio of evidence that they meet the Standards for QTS and this is compiled during the course. Lesson plans, schemes of work and notes from GPS sessions may be included as evidence. In addition, trainees are required to pass Skills Tests in Numeracy, Literacy and ICT.
