School Centred Initial Teacher Training

School Centred Initial Teacher Training is a pathway to train to teach which is entirely school based.

SCITT is accredited by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) and leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) from the DCSF.

What are the benefits of a School Centred course?

The major benefit is that you have the opportunity to join an effective school as part of a professional team right from the start. This will involve you in all aspects of the teacher's role and ensures you are well prepared to join the teaching profession as a Newly Qualified Teacher at the end of the course.

In a SCITT scheme, you establish very close working relationships with other professionals, including a subject teacher who is assigned to each trainee as a mentor during the period of their training in that school.

The links with other schools in the Collegiate give trainees a much broader experience than would otherwise be the case. Trainees meet weekly for training sessions and this enables them to share good practice and discuss their experiences in the different schools. The links between theory and practice are constantly reinforced by the practical nature of the course.

Bromley Schools Collegiate was established in 1993 and was awarded 'Outstanding' status by Ofsted in 2009

  • High quality training meets the needs of trainees extremely well
  • Trainees have secure professional skills
  • The quality of the training, support and guidance provided by Senior Mentors is exemplary.
  • All trainers and headteachers are highly commited and involved in all aspects of the partership

General Professional Studies

Trainees attend weekly professional studies sessions. These address the practical application of theory and are delivered by experienced practitioners. Trainees are allocated study periods for research and reading.

Assessment

There is no final examination and assessment is continuous throughout the course. During the course, trainees are required to collate an e-portfolio of evidence that they meet the Standards for QTS.  Lesson plans, schemes of work and notes from GPS sessions may be included as evidence. In addition, trainees are required to pass Skills Tests in Numeracy, Literacy and ICT.
