Welcome to Bromley Schools' Collegiate

About the Collegiate.

Sorry, all places have now been filled for September 2009 for both routes. Please apply for SCITT from November 09, for GTP from December 2009 / January 2010.

Bromley Schools' Collegiate offers a School Centred Initial Teacher Training Course for post-graduates who wish to teach in secondary schools. The course leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).

This is a one year full time course with training based entirely in a consortium of eight successful Bromley secondary schools.

The course is eligible for funding from the Trainee's LEA and from the Student Loans Company. Trainees are liable for tuition fees to the training provider (see tuition fees* below).
From September 2006, Trainees in secondary shortage** subjects will receive a £9,000 tax-free training bursary and those trainng in non-shortage subjects will receive £6000.

**Shortage subjects offered by Bromley Schools' Collegiate are: Maths, Science, Modern Languages, ICT and RE.

Following successful completion of the Induction year (first year of teaching), those trained in Maths and Science will receive an additional 'golden hello' of £5,000; MFL, ICT RE will receive £2,500.

The course is full-time for one academic year (September to July). Trainees spend all their time in 2 school placements and are assigned an experienced subject teacher as their individual mentor to support them through each placement.

Subjects offered are:

  • English
  • Geography
  • History
  • Mathematics*
  • Religious Education*
  • Science*
  • Modern Languages*
  • Information Technology*

* designated shortage subjects

There are 9 Foundation Status schools in the Collegiate - 2 girls' schools, 1 boys' school and 6 mixed schools. Trainees spend some time in each school, but the bulk of the course is spent in two of the schools from September-December and January-July.

Schools in the partnership include:

  • Beaverwood School For Girls, Chislehurst
  • Bishop Justus, Bromley
  • Bullers Wood School, Chislehurst
  • Charles Darwin School, Biggin Hill
  • Coopers, Chislehurst
  • Darrick Wood, Orpington
  • Hayes School, Hayes
  • The Priory, Orpington
  • Ravens Wood School for Boys, Bromley

Trainees start by observing lessons and progress through collaborative teaching with their Mentor to whole class teaching.

There are weekly Professional Studies sessions to consider the practical application of theory and to give trainees an opportunity to meet and share experiences.

Assessment is continuous, being based on the Trainee's performance in the classroom and on their portfolio which includes their professional and subject knowledge development. In addition Trainees have to complete two written assignments and deliver two Research Seminars.

Entry requirements are:
Maths and English GCSE at grade C, and a good degree, which should be 50%* in the subject which the applicant wishes to train to teach.

* Exceptions may be made in shortage subjects such as Maths, Science and MFL.

Candidates must however, demonstrate that they have sufficient subject knowledge to teach the subject according to the National Curriculum.

Candidates may wish to join ' enhancement' courses to increase their subject knowledge, prior to an ITT course. Details can be found on the TDA website: www.tda.gov.uk/recruit

Offers of places will be made on a definite, conditional or waiting list basis, but the Collegiate reserves the right not to discuss with applicants the reasons for not calling individuals to interview or not offering a place after interview.

Qualified Teacher Status

Trainees are assessed throughout the course. This involves lesson observations; research seminars; 3 written assignments and submission of a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate that all Standards required for Qualified Teacher Status have been met. At the end of the course, trainees are assessed by an external assessor. If successful, they are then recommended for QTS.

Trainees are presented with their certificates at an award ceremony in July. 100% of our trainees gain employment as a teacher following successful completion of the course.
